May is Young Driver Awareness Month

For young people, teens especially, driving means freedom. Teens, as well, have a profound sense of invincibility. When invincibility and freedom are combined the result can be deadly. Of course their intent isn’t malicious – few who cause traffic fatalities are malicious. However, the result is often carnage in the streets. Unfortunately the numbers don’t lie. The casualty rate increases significantly between the ages of 15 and 25 and then tapers off as drivers become more mature.

Teen males make up the bulk of the fatalities. Young females are involved in almost as many injury collisions as young males.
